During Meta connect today, Meta revealed what they have been working on for more than ten years. It’s code-named Orion Glasses, and it’s meta’s next-generation augmented reality glasses.
Meta is calling Orion Glasses the most advanced AR glasses ever, and they certainly showed that during the show. We learned a few things about them – they are lightweight, and they rely on projection technology. They have holographic displays, with the largest field of view ever seen. Meta says this allows for immersive cases such as “multitasking windows and big-screen entertainment to life-size holograms of people”.
The frames are made of magnesium, and the display is made of optical-grade silicon carbide. this gives you a 70 degree DOV. It also has sensors o the size, which allows for both eye and hand tracking. Artificial Intelligence can also use these, giving you insights into your world.
Some controls seem to use a wristband, which uses something called electromyography (EMG) technology. According to meta, this will allow you to have effortless input. The wristband also has haptic feedback, and they promise it’s comfortable and lightweight.
Right now, Orion Glasses is still in development. We don’t know a release date or have a price point. Mark Zuckerberg said the team has a lot of work to do. They want to make it even smaller, and make sure everyone can afford one.
Meta also revealed the Quest 3S today, a more affordable version of the Quest 3.
